What a great weekend of sailing at North Cape.  6 races with 5-15 out of the NW on Saturday and 5-10 out of the SW on Sunday.  Friends from Cleveland, Detroit, Bay City, Chicago, Milwaukee and Thunder Bay made the trek to North Cape.

What struck me most was the number of talented young sailors that attended this regatta.  MI Class promoter John McCree sailed with 2 junior sailors from PYC.  He graciously crews on his boat and tries to sail with someone new at most regattas, to help promote the class.  Liz Obermaier (steering) and Nicole Millerman did a great job of mixing it up.  PYC Jr. Coach Brian Williams sailed with Luuk Schmidt and Isabel Dziuba.  My niece Meghan Dieball was able to borrow a boat and bring a team down from Grosse Ile.  She sailed with fellow juniors Ian Reimel and Chris Twomley.  Finally, Boat Grant recipients Alex Cox, Nikka Stoger and Courtney Rizuto made the trip from Thunder Bay and sailed very well, especially on Sunday.  Honorable mentions go to recent former NCYC junior sailors that included Keith Frederick, Kyle Gladieux, Colin and Ian Mackay.  It was great to see all of these “kids” sailing Lightnings and asking questions before and after racing.

NCYC usually hosts the Great Lakes as a stand-alone event for Lightnings but decided to open up to the Snipe and Finn classes this year.  It was a treat to see friends that we do not run into that often that sail these other classes.  Special thanks go to PRO Bill Pribe and his RC team for running great races in very shifty conditions.  Also, to our team of volunteers that was headed by our leader George “Geo” Sipel.  Thanks to my team of Jacqueline and Amy for working hard and getting us around the course.  Congrats to Teams Morin and Snyder for well sailed series and for all of the teams for attending this year.

Consider coming to NCYC next year for the Great Lakes…and bring a junior or young sailor!
