It is with deep sadness that we acknowledge the passing of Bill Mauk.

Bill was a longtime member of the Lightning Class. For decades he has been a fixture at all of the major Class championships, be they Worlds, North Americans or Districts, as well as innumerable regattas throughout the US. He served in leadership roles at many levels including Fleet, District and Governing Board. He had a deep interest in maintaining the international stature of the Class and was always striving to keep our non-US members well represented and included in the decision-making process. In furtherance of that interest, he served as the Lightning VP of the Pan Am Games up until last year when he passed on the torch to give others the opportunity to serve and better the Class. Bill was actively involved in organizing and promoting Florida regattas and was roundly recognized as the spark that kept Florida Lightning sailing flourishing.

Many things come to mind when thinking about Bill. First, he was always ready to go out sailing! It was in his blood. He was dedicated to introducing and teaching our youth and those new to the sport how to sail. His encouragement and recognition of our older sailors was instrumental in keeping them at it! Bill did all of this with an obvious zest for life, health and a Corinthian spirit.

Bill was never short of a story. He was an interesting man who shared his knowledge with others. As a volunteer with the Peace Corps or part of a political campaign, Bill worked selflessly with any team. Travel and culture were passions of both Bill and his wife Jo. They made friends at every stop and while at home they hosted many travelers.

Our thoughts and condolences go out to Jo and the entire Mauk Family. The Lightning Class mourns our dear friend.

Unfortunately, due to COVID, the family is not planning an memorial service at this time. They look forward to the day when we can get together in-person to share stories and celebrate Bill's adventure-filled life.
