8 Bells... Paul A. Huntsman, Jr. (Sandy)
It is with sadness we share the passing of Sandy Huntsman on Thursday, November 26. He is now at rest with his wife Mary. Sandy the avid sailor, story and joke teller, dedicated teacher, wine connoisseur and lover of a good meal with friends and family was a long time leader in the Class. He held many positions including Class President in 1983. Both Sandy and Mary gave so much to the Class, even helping to preserve Lightning #1. Click on the link to read a beautiful tribute to Sandy.  He lead a life of accomplishment and lived with zest and humor.

Mary Huntsman History Fund - PROJECT COMPLETE!

The project of having all the old yearbooks and Flashes Newsletters professionally scanned and made available via the class website is DONE! We invite you to search for your old boat or perhaps a loved family member or maybe the history of your club or fleet. Each file is searchable for a hull number, name or specific words without reading through the whole document. These publications date back to 1940 and include well over 500+ new files being posted.

A special THANK YOU to those that donated to the Mary Huntsman History Fund for helping to make this project possible.

And because this is just too good not to share!
Check out the Lightning Class Advertisement in Scuttlebutt Sailing News highlighting our great news!

Just in time for those long winter nights…

The Lightning Class is now sharing over 82 years of Yearbooks and Newsletters. It’s a slice of history documenting a who’s who of sailing and the evolution of a classic Sparkman & Stephens design into a modern one-design boat.

Visit us at www.lightningclass.org. What you will see is a long history of multi-generational, family-oriented sailors competing and socializing together at the local, regional, national, and international levels.  In addition to major area and World Championships, there have been Junior, Women and Master’s Championships in place for almost 50 years.  But the real strength of the Class is reflected in the regattas conducted week in and week out the world over.

The boat is timeless and affordable.  “Not your father’s Oldsmobile” the boat has seen controlled evolution with the introduction of new technology as it has become available, yet older boats remain competitive because of the strength of the design and the class organization. Read some of the old measurer’s reports and look at a few ads from the sailmakers, boat builders, and hardware vendors of decades ago.

The Lightning story documents one-design sailing from its infancy to current times. Of greater consequence, the story is the story of so many great sailors that are part of the Class. Dennis Conner, Ted Turner, Dave Dellenbaugh, Ched Proctor, Betsy Alison, Greg Fisher, Cory Sertl, Jody Starck and Alan Terhune. Our history documents the growth of these great sailors and many more.

Get involved and make history. Sail a Lightning.

REMINDER

We need you to vote for Lightning sailors!

After making waves (racing Lightnings!) in the 1st fully-automated race course in October, MarkSetBot has now been recognized by World Sailing as a finalist in the World Sailing 11th Hour Racing Sustainability competition.  The Bot is the brainchild of Detroit Lightning racer Kevin Morin and the fully-automated regatta furthered the sustainability vision of the company.

We’re asking Lightning Class Members to cast their vote for a fellow Lightning sailor by clicking here.  Voting ends December 4th, so please do it now. It takes less than 10 seconds, is only 2 clicks and does not require you to enter any personal information!
