About this event
Update Feb 17, 2021:
The regatta re-scheduled for July 7-11, 2021 has been canceled.
Thank you for your patience and correspondence while we planned, postponed and rescheduled the 2020 Lightning Youth Worlds. The news today is bad and good--we will start with the bad news: The 2020 Lightning Youth Worlds which were postponed have now been canceled for 2021. The good news is the Lightning Class embraces young sailors and there will be many opportunities for you to sail Lightnings in the near future.
The decision to cancel was not an easy one. Consultations with medical professionals, uncertainties of international travel and the overwhelming goal of keeping our competitors and volunteers safe all factored into the decision. The Youth Worlds is an event at which the social interaction is as much a part of the affair as the racing. This treasured Lightning Class event involves many volunteers and much interaction with and between competitors from 3 continents, which does not seem prudent at this time. More information regarding future Youth Worlds scheduling will be forthcoming—it will return!!
With enthusiastic junior competitors from so many countries, we know the outlook is positive. We encourage all countries and all sailors to take this time to prepare for the future. If your climate and local health policies allow, get some time on the water. Train some new sailors, practice with your team, or have a virtual clinic. Plan local youth clinics or regattas and recruit some new sailors. Reach out to some of the friends you’ve made at past events to reconnect. We will be sailing and socializing again—take this time to prepare for it!
Stay Safe, Stay Positive and Stay Tuned!!
The 2021 Lightning Youth World Championship will be held at Sail Sheboygan with assistance from Fleet 187, The Midwest District and Sheboygan Yacht Club. The Organizing Team is looking forward to hosting 20 (possibly more) Teams.
Expected Weather Conditions
Daytime high air temperatures in July average 80 degrees with the nightly low in the 60’s. Lake Michigan’s cool water temperature and warm summer days provide reliable and predictable southerly thermal breezes that range from 5-17 knots. Daily and historical wind speed and direction and air temperatures are available through a NOAA National Data Buoy Center maintained at the Sheboygan Harbor Lighthouse. The data can be found at
http://www.ndbc.noaa.gov/station_page.php?station=sgnw3. Wave height is generally determined by wind direction and velocity and is generally 1-2 feet but may range from 0 to 6 feet. Current is minimal.
Qualification:
Teams that were qualified for the 2020 Event will be given an automatic invitation to the 2021 event. The Governing Board has passed a temporary amendment for the 2021 event that increases the participant age to 21. As a clarification, neither the skipper nor crew can turn 22 years old in the year they sail the 2021 World Youth Championship.
If there are any open slots they will be filled according to the Class Rules.
If you are interested in participating in the Youth Worlds please check with your Country VP, local District Commodore, VP Youth Worlds and the ILCA Class Office to be placed on a waiting list.
