The Magic of the Midnight Sun in a Finnish Summer

Finland is famous for its summertime “white nights,” and Midsummer is the brightest of them all. At Midsummer (“Juhannus”), the days stretch to their longest, and the sun barely sets, creating the magical glow of the white nights.

So, what do Finns actually do on Midsummer? Traditionally, it has been a time for weddings and love spells, deeply rooted in Finnish folklore. One well-known tale tells of a young maiden who places seven flowers under her pillow on Midsummer night and dreams of her future fiancé.

These days, Midsummer is about lighting bonfires (“kokko”), barbecuing, long bathing sessions in the sauna, and cooling off with refreshing swims in nearby lakes. With traditions running deep, celebrations spring up all across Finland, and since it’s hard to tell when night even begins, the festivities often continue well into the early hours – sometimes ending with a late-night swim with friends.

We’d love to invite you, our young class members, to share this experience with us. Midsummer is the perfect time to make new friends, take on the tricky winds of Lake Tuusula, and enjoy the white nights doing what we love most – sailing.

Together with Tuusulanjärven Purjehtijat, our district is getting everything ready to welcome you to the Youth Worlds 2026 in Finland. Check out the NOR on Manage2Sail for all the details, and reach out to your district leader to find out how to join in.

We can’t wait to celebrate sailing, friendships, and unforgettable summer nights with you!

P.S. Older members, family, and support crews are more than welcome to join in!

Best wishes,

Sanni Siira
