Hands On Workshop: Re-Canvas A Deck

Published on 11/30/2022

To:  Classic Lightning Owners, Enthusiasts, and anyone else interested in learning the traditional method of finishing the deck on a Lightning and other boats.

We still have a few spots left - Come join use for a hands on workshop where we plan to re-canvas the decks on four classic / wood Lightning Class Sailboats, in the workshops of the Finger Lakes Boating Museum (FLBM) in Hammondsport NY over the weekend of March 31 to April 2, 2023.  Class group size is limited so sign up soon.

Registration Form can be found at this link ]

The program is sponsored by the Museum along with the Classic Boats fleet of the International Lightning Class Association.  This is our groups first try at a boat maintenance workshop.  Something we have discussed trying for several years.  It will be a great time, and hopefully the first of many such activities.

Canvas is a traditional covering for boat decks on wooden boats.  It provides both a classy finish and antiskid properties, and properly applied will last for years.  Come join us in the museum workshops and learn these skills under the guidance of experienced craftsman in their first-rate facilities.

Tuition is just $200 for the weekend, proceeds are a charitable contribution to the efforts of the museum, which currently has on display the original mold used to build the early Skaneateles Lightnings, along with restored Lightning #167.

Both a fabulous opportunity to learn how to do prepare and install this traditional wooden boat deck finish, and an opportunity to meet and work with a group of fellow Lightning and wood boat enthusiasts.

Details above and below subject to change, and enrollment is limited.  We will notify all whom have registered of any changes as they are implemented.

We believe we have lined up the boats that will be used as subjects for the program.  However, the situation may change as the event approaches.  If you wish your boat to be placed on a waiting list for inclusion as a subject for the program, please identify such on the registration form.

Registering now is not a firm commitment.  We will confirm the list of attendees at a later date and maintain a waiting list should the class fill.
