A Lightning Lab is typically a one to two day sailing clinic aimed to improve skills for Lightning sailors of all abilities. It is run by a coach with extensive experience in a Lightning. Boat handling drills, starting practice, tuning and sail trim are common themes.
It can be combined with on the water critique during racing like the very successful mentor program at the Lightning Southern Circuit. Video tape analysis of the day’s practice may also be used. Videos of a previous Lab in Salinas, and previous debriefings by top sailors at Lightning regattas can be found on the ILCA website under the Racing Tab - Articles/Videos - YouTube Videos
Most sailors find that they can learn more in a two day lab than a whole season of racing. With the help of a coach and video, there is a chance to step back and get an unbiased evaluation of your sailing. No matter what your skill level, there is always something to learn. A lab is also a real fleet-building activity.
Lightning Labs are supported by the ILCA Fund. These funds can be used to help pay for travel expenses and coaching fees for a coach. The Class will also help promote your Lab within the Class. Your fleet would then run the event.

Coaches should be lined up early, before they make other plans for the dates that you may want to host a Lab. The Class will also have more time to advertise your lab. Inquire about a lab today!
