Why You Should Participate In your District Championship

It is June and the sailing season is well underway. We have seen (recent) record participation at regattas in Burlington, VT and Green Bay, WI. This is GREAT! It is an exciting time of year because the level of competition starts to ramp up from your local fleet sailing and it’s fun. Traditionally, this is one of the busiest sailing months and for many this means sailing in your District Championship. 

Participating in your District Championship is important. It is a time when you are supporting your local fleets and local sailors. It is a time when you meet new people, new sailors to the Lightning, and a most of all, knock the rust off and try to win a regatta. And the cocktails, cookouts and camaraderie are always the best after a day of sailing.

If your class membership has lapsed for whatever reason, it’s a perfect time (mandatory for entry) to renew and renew your crew membership too. Class membership provides a tremendous value to boatowners, skippers, crew and others.

Finally, sailing your District Championship (and perhaps a neighboring Districts) may satisfy my “President’s Challenge” whereby I was asking you to consider traveling to a regional regatta. Supporting regattas is critical to class health. I hope to see you on the water soon!
